EU protects Hungarian wines of Tokaj from Chinese replicas in the future
The European Commission announced on Wednesday that a bilateral agreement was made regarding the geographical signatures of products from different countries. In the agreement, Hungarian Tokaj wines were included to be protected from fake replicas in the future.
Világgazdaság reported that this agreement includes Tokaj wines, Champagne, feta cheese, Irish Whiskey, Münchener Bier, Ouzo, Polska Wódka, Porto, Prosciutto di Parma, and Queso Manchego. Among Chinese products, Pixian Dou-Ban (beans), Anji Bai Cha (white tea), Panjin Da Mi (rice), and Anqiu Di Jiang (ginger) got featured.
To completely accept this agreement, the EU needs the final permission from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. After it is done, this agreement will become valid by the end of 2020 with an additional 175 products added.
Regarding the export of all kinds of foods and drinks, China is the main export country all across the world. Between September 2018 and August 2019, the value of exported products into the country reached 12.8 billion EUR. For the European Union, China is the second most important export country.
The EU protects approximately 3,300 different products and an additional 1,250 products which have no EU origins. These products represent 74.8 billion EUR (from this, exporting drinks is 15.4%).
